USARD Announces New Southern California Chapter
As another good sign of interest and growth, USARD is happy and proud to announce that a new chapter has been organized to appeal to rudimental drummers living the greater Los Angeles areas and beyond. This exciting development came about two weeks ago through the initiative of our new member, Ben Curtis, of Newhall, CA, who asked about creating a new chapter for that area and then, very generously, volunteered to take on role of Chapter Coordinator.
USARD Announces New Southern Cal Chapter As another good sign of interest and growth, USARD is happy and proud to announce that a new chapter has been organized to appeal to rudimental drummers living the greater Los Angeles areas and beyond. This exciting development came about two weeks ago through the initiative of our new member, Ben Curtis, of Newhall, CA, who asked about creating a new chapter for that area and then, very generously, volunteered to take on role of Chapter Coordinator. A long-time drummer and native of Spokane, Washington, Ben has broad experience and interest in rudimental drumming, highlighted by a stint as bass drummer and, later, snare drummer with the renowned USAF Pipe Band, Washington D.C. Playing in the 2002 “reunion” performance and recording opportunities that “reunited” the Pipe Band for the first time in 32 years helped convince him to bring drumming back into a life already full with family, business and community service. Ben organized and held the So Cal chapter’s first “meeting” on Tuesday, Feb. 24th, where he and three other interested drummers met to get acquainted. According to the report of another participant, John Davis, things apparently went very well: “Sorry you missed the chapter's inaugural meeting. Ben gave us the low down and you should receive a roster and dues soon. We had 3 drummers along with Ben so we have 4 co-presidents! HA! Looking forward to hearing from you and trading music.” Well, John, all I can say is that we only need three presidents! On behalf of all of us at USARD, welcome Ben, and thanks for your organizing work. We are delighted to have you with us and look forward to hearing more from the new, growing So Cal chapter. The USARD is dedicated to the Performance, Preservation and Promotion of the Art of Rudimental Drumming. USARD encourages regional chapters that will meet to discuss, practice and perform. Members of the chapters meet annually for business and pleasure - mostly the pleasure of drumming! The annual convention is a showcase for the talented members who will perform as individuals or in ensembles. Each year the convention features one or more special performer or prominent clinician. The idea of Individual and Ensemble (I and E) competition is being discussed. The USARD is a great group to join if you are interested in getting back into your old love - rudimental drumming. It's also a wonderful opportunity for young drummers to see and hear some of the older styles of their predecessors such as Ancient (rope-tension) and classic drum and bugle corps drumming. You will meet some legendary drummers at a USARD convention! We'd also love to meet some of today's contemporary drummers so we can share ideas and enjoy some of the new and exciting ideas of the modern drummer.
Drum notation in the form of solos, exercises or ensemble pieces will be available to members from this website for their personal and chapter use. Some drumming pieces will be dedicated to the annual mass drumming performance.
The United States Association of Rudimental Drummers offers members many opportunities to enjoy and contribute to rudimental drumming:
